EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Executive Director will be a skilled leader and manager who shares MFM’s passionate determination that the midwifery model of care can be the basis of a successful health care system in which Traditional Midwives, with appropriate training, are the front line in addressing reproductive health care needs in Guatemala.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Administration of all aspects of organization's operations. Categories of position responsibilities include leadership and representation, program support and development, financial management and development, organization development, and supervision and human resource development. With the Development Director, serve as the staff liaison to the Board of Directors.
- Supervises Director of Development, Program Coordinator, Midwife Trainers, and Volunteers
- Maintains relationships with staff, Board Members, funders, volunteers, other constituents and stakeholders, and community at large, including professionals and community and agency representatives.
- Direct the activities of MFM with responsibility for program development, budget, financial and organization development of the organization. Hold final accountability for decisions and supervision of organization's operations, within the stated by-laws, policies and operating guidelines of MFM.
Additional Qualifications and Tasks
- Program Development and Midwifery Capacity-Building: Work with midwife trainers and Program Coordinator to further develop and refine MFM’s model Midwifery Training program, and work with monitoring and evaluation methods of the training program. Lead MFM’s work to provide capacity-building and technical assistance to organizations of traditional midwives. Continue liasons with the Ministry of Health of Guatemala and midwifery organizations to further our goals of establishing professional community based midwifery on a national level.
- Strategic: Conceptualize, develop and recommend to the Board of Directors specific short- and long-term plans for the development of organization's programs and services. Manage implementation and secure ongoing Board and staff support for the directions and goals of strategic plan. Develop work plans and new initiatives to achieve MFM's goals and assess current and future work against it.
- Financial: Develop and recommend to the Board the organization's budget and administer report on and control the budget. Assist with development of financial management policies (i.e., investment policies), cash flow management, donor reporting and annual audits, etc. Commission and prepare all necessary documents for annual financial audit. Work in conjunction with Board Treasurer and in compliance with Generally Accepted Principles of Accounting. Responsible for day-to-day management of finances including payroll and taxes. Review purchase orders, sign checks, review monthly financial statements. (Some of these tasks are currently delegated to the Board Treasurer.)
- Human Resource Management: Recruit, interview, make recommendations for hire, train and supervise staff and volunteers, and provide for staff development. Manage and work collaboratively with staff to ensure optimal operation of programs and initiatives, ongoing assessment of MFM work, and the development of new initiatives to address emerging issues. Provide annual performance evaluations of staff and volunteers.
- Community Relations: Maintain relationships and a representational role with donor and professional groups including funding foundations, other NGOs, etc. Maintain effective external relations with policymakers, opinion leaders and donors. Interpret organization's mission and function to the community, to other agencies, funding sources, the Board, clients, and through public relations. Build liaisons and work collaboratively with organizations with shared social and political vision. Represent organization professionally and positively at political events, educational programs, community events and to the media. Serve as a spokesperson on MFM issues.
- Fund Raising: Ensure that MFM maintains relationships with foundation, corporate, and major individual donors. Ensure, through supervision of Fundraising staff, ongoing prospect research, and timely submission of proposals, reports, and donor appeals.
- Administration: Develop administrative practices for the effective and economical operation of the organization, based on Board-approved policies. Provide leadership to staff; establish management policies, procedures, standards and expectation. With the Board chair, act as the legal representative of the organization for contracts and obligations.
- Board Management: Distribute necessary materials and mailings in a timely manner. Follow up with Board requests for information, materials, documents, etc. in a timely and professional manner. Provide information the Board needs to make informed decisions on direction and policy including accurate and timely financial information.
- Non-Classified Responsibilities: Respond to organization's needs by performing other tasks assigned by the Board of Directors which do not fall within the above description.
Qualifications:
- Certified nurse midwife preferred but will consider MPH or other related experience.
- Demonstrated ability to run an international women's health initative.
- Excellent Spanish-language skills a must. Experience with project design and related budgetary and financing needs.
- Visionary understanding of midwifery and its potential to address Guatemala’s understanding of midwifery philosophy and practice as it relates to international reproductive health.
- Experience working in developing countries.
- Masters degree preferred.
Qualities
- Strong interest in and knowledge of midwifery, a commitment to working with and on the behalf of indigenous women to achieve progressive change in the systems affecting their lives.
- Innovative, creative, flexible, respectful.
- Several years’ not-for-profit management experience or equivalent experience with a not-for-profit entity, including experience in strategic direction, financial and organizational development. Demonstrated success in organizational, program, financial, and personnel management; public education experience. The ability to interact effectively with diverse audiences and constituencies.
Travel and Job Location
Frequent travel to Guatemala necessary. Must drive and be able to travel within Guatemala. Time is divided between the U.S. and Guatemala. Home office in Catskill, N.Y. but U.S. location is flexible.
